About Breakout
Breakout is the brick-busting arcade classic that defined a genre. You control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, bounce a ball into a wall of coloured bricks, and clear every brick on the board without letting the ball fall past you. Simple to learn, endlessly replayable — and famously difficult to master once the ball speeds up.
This free online version runs instantly in your browser with no download and no sign-up. It features four rotating brick patterns, three power-up capsules, a combo multiplier for chaining hits, and endless levels that each play slightly faster than the last. Every brick row has its own hit points and score value, so where you aim the ball matters as much as how well you keep it alive.
Controls are designed to work anywhere: keyboard (arrow keys or A / D), mouse (move over the board), touch (drag your finger), and an on-screen pad. Your best score is saved locally so you can return and try to beat it.
How to play Breakout
- Move the paddle. Use ← and → or A / D on a keyboard, move your mouse over the board, or drag your finger on a touchscreen.
- Serve the ball. Click, tap, or press Space to launch the ball. It bounces off walls, bricks, and your paddle.
- Break the bricks. Top rows take 2 or 3 hits and score more points. Chain brick hits without touching the paddle to build a combo multiplier up to ×4.
- Catch power-ups. Destroyed bricks sometimes drop falling capsules. W gives a wide paddle for 12 seconds, S slows the ball for 10 seconds, and ♥ grants an extra life.
- Clear every brick to advance to the next level, which uses a new pattern and speeds up the ball. The game ends when all three lives are lost.
Scoring, brick health and power-ups
- Top row bricks — 30 points. Require 3 hits to break.
- Second row bricks — 20 points. Require 2 hits to break.
- Remaining bricks — 10 points. Break in a single hit.
- Level 4 and up adds 1 extra hit point to each of the top three rows, so late-game boards take noticeably longer to clear.
- Combo multiplier. Every brick hit without the paddle touching the ball adds to your combo. Every 6 hits raises the multiplier, up to ×4. Touching the ball with the paddle resets it.
- Level-clear bonus. When you clear a board, you earn 100 × level bonus points on top of the bricks you broke.
- Wide capsule (W) — 12 seconds. The paddle grows from 110 to 168 pixels wide.
- Slow capsule (S) — 10 seconds. The ball speed drops by 28%. Great for saving a bad run.
- Life capsule (♥) — one extra life. Capped at 5 lives total.
How the difficulty scales
Breakout gets harder in three ways as you progress, and each one changes how you should play:
- The ball speeds up every level. Base speed rises by about 0.4 pixels per frame each level and caps around level 11. At that point, the ball is roughly twice as fast as at level 1.
- The brick pattern changes. Four different layouts rotate through the levels, including dense grids, striped rows, and a hollow "fortress" board with a solid outer ring.
- Bricks get tankier. From level 4 onward, the top three rows all gain one extra hit point, so the same board takes noticeably more work to clear.
The result is a game that stays readable but gets genuinely tense. Good positioning on the paddle and smart power-up use matter more as you climb.
Breakout tips and strategy
- Aim with the edges of the paddle. The ball bounces off based on where it hits. Hitting the far edge sends it sharply sideways; hitting dead centre sends it straight up. Use this to angle shots at tough bricks.
- Clear the top rows first. They are worth the most points, and removing them early gives the ball more room to bounce high up the wall — where you have more time to react.
- Try to keep the ball above the bricks. When the ball is bouncing near the top of the board, you have much more time before it comes back down. When it drops below the brick wall, reactions get tight.
- Never chase a capsule into a bad spot. A power-up is only worth having if you can reach it without dropping the ball. Skip it if the ball is heading for a corner.
- Bank shots are your friend. When the ball is trapped in a corner of the brick wall, aim it at the side walls to hit bricks you cannot reach directly.
- Use Slow to reset a losing position. If the ball is too fast to track and your paddle is out of position, a Slow capsule buys you 10 seconds of breathing room.
- Keep the ball alive above all else. Points reset when you lose a life, so the highest scores come from long, patient runs rather than risky play.
- Level 4+ needs patience. With tankier bricks, do not try to clear the whole board in a rush. Chip away at the top rows while keeping the ball safely in play.
Why Breakout is still a great game
Breakout is one of the purest tests of hand-eye coordination ever designed. There is no randomness in the ball's bounce and no hidden state — every miss is genuinely your own, and every save is genuinely earned. That clarity is why the game has stayed relevant for over 45 years, from arcade cabinets to early home consoles to modern browser remakes.
Playing Breakout also builds useful habits: tracking a moving object under pressure, planning where to send it rather than just reacting to where it is, and managing risk when a power-up appears in a dangerous spot. That combination of reflex and judgement is the same skill set used in fast-paced real-world tasks, which is why Breakout remains a favourite for anyone who wants a short, focused reaction workout.
Breakout FAQ
How do you play Breakout?
Move the paddle left and right to keep the ball in play, then bounce it into the bricks to break them. Clear every brick on the board without losing all three lives to win the level.
What are the controls?
On a keyboard, use the left and right arrow keys or A and D. You can also move the mouse over the board to steer, drag your finger on a touchscreen, or use the on-screen controls below the board. Press Space to serve and P or Esc to pause.
Are all bricks the same?
No. The top row of bricks takes 3 hits to break and is worth 30 points each. The second row takes 2 hits and is worth 20. The rest take 1 hit and are worth 10. At level 4 and beyond, the top three rows gain an extra hit point.
How many lives do I get?
You start with three lives. You lose one each time the ball drops below the paddle, and the game ends when all three are gone. The ♥ power-up capsule grants an extra life, up to a maximum of 5.
What are the power-up capsules?
There are three power-ups. W (cyan) widens your paddle for 12 seconds. S (purple) slows the ball for 10 seconds. ♥ (pink) grants an extra life. Capsules drop from destroyed bricks at random — about 1 in 6 bricks.
How does the combo multiplier work?
Every brick you hit without touching the paddle with the ball increments your combo. Every 6 hits adds one to the multiplier, up to a maximum of ×4. Touching the ball with the paddle resets the combo to zero, so the biggest scores come from long stretches of pure brick-hitting.
Does the ball get faster?
Yes. The base ball speed rises by about 0.4 pixels per frame each level and caps at a maximum around level 11. The Slow power-up temporarily reduces the speed by 28% for 10 seconds.
What is a good Breakout score?
A full board of bricks at level 1 is worth around 1,400 points with no combos. Reaching 5,000 requires clearing several levels and chaining combos. Skilled players with good power-up play reach into the tens of thousands.
Can I play Breakout on my phone?
Yes. Breakout is fully playable on phones and tablets. Drag your finger across the board to steer the paddle and tap to serve. The board scales to fit your screen and locks out page scrolling while you play.
Does Breakout need a download?
No. Breakout is built with plain HTML5 Canvas, CSS and JavaScript and runs directly in any modern browser. There is no download, no install and no signup.
