About Tic-Tac-Toe
Tic-Tac-Toe — also called Noughts and Crosses, or X's and O's — is one of the oldest and most universally recognised games in the world. Two players take turns claiming squares on a simple 3×3 grid, and the first to line up three of their marks in a row — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins. If the board fills up without a line, the game is a draw.
The rules take seconds to learn, but the game hides surprising depth. Because the board is so small and every position can be calculated, Tic-Tac-Toe is what mathematicians call a solved game: with perfect play from both sides, every game ends in a draw. There is no way to force a win against a perfect opponent, and no way to lose if you also play perfectly. That balance is exactly why the game has stayed popular for centuries — and why it is still one of the best ways to teach strategic thinking to children.
This free online version runs instantly in your browser with no download and no sign-up. Play solo against the computer on Easy, Medium or Unbeatable, or share one screen with a friend in 2 Players mode. Your wins, draws and best win streak are tracked as you play, and your best streak is saved locally so you can try to beat it on your next visit.
How to play Tic-Tac-Toe
- Choose a mode — vs Computer for a solo game, or 2 Players to share one screen. Against the computer, pick a difficulty: Easy, Medium or Unbeatable.
- X always moves first. Tap or click any empty square to place your mark, or press number keys 1 to 9 (1 is the top-left square, 9 is the bottom-right).
- Take turns until someone lines up three in a row or all nine squares are filled.
- Three in a row wins, and a glowing line is drawn through the winning row. A full board with no line is a draw. Press Play again to start the next game.
Computer levels explained
- Easy: mostly random moves. A relaxed level for practice and for younger players. Wins here do not count toward your streak.
- Medium: takes a win when it sees one and usually blocks yours, but still slips up now and then. Beat it to build your win streak.
- Unbeatable: uses the perfect minimax strategy with alpha-beta pruning. It never loses, so a draw is the best result you can get. Beating it is mathematically impossible.
How the win streak works
Each win against the computer on Medium or Unbeatable adds one to your current streak. A draw leaves it unchanged and a loss resets it to zero. Easy is practice mode, so wins there do not count toward the streak — that keeps the leaderboard honest. Your best streak across all sessions is saved in your browser and shown in the score strip above the board.
Tic-Tac-Toe tips and strategy
- If you go first, start in a corner. Corner openings create the most winning threats and force your opponent to defend immediately.
- Always block a two-in-a-row. Before building your own line, check whether your opponent can win on their next move. If they can, block it.
- Control the centre. The centre square is the strongest single spot on the board because it appears in four of the eight possible winning lines. Take it early if your opponent does not.
- Look for a fork. A fork is a move that creates two separate lines of two at once, so your opponent can only block one and you win next turn. Forks are the main way to win against strong opponents.
- Against Unbeatable, play for the draw. Block every threat, take a corner or the centre on your turn, and force the stalemate. A draw against a perfect opponent is a genuine victory.
- Do not waste the middle of a row. An edge square is weaker than a corner or the centre, because it appears in fewer winning lines.
Why Tic-Tac-Toe is good for your brain
Despite its simple rules, Tic-Tac-Toe quietly trains several useful skills. Every turn asks you to read the whole board, spot threats, and plan one move ahead. That is the same pattern-recognition and short-term planning you use in chess, checkers and many puzzle games.
For young children, Tic-Tac-Toe is often the very first strategy game they learn, and playing against a perfect opponent is a great way to teach the idea of a forced draw — the concept that some positions cannot be won no matter what you do, and that defending well is a real skill. Adults who play regularly will find their blocking and forking instincts sharpening within a few games.
Tic-Tac-Toe FAQ
Is Tic-Tac-Toe free to play here?
Yes. The game is completely free, needs no download or account, and runs directly in your web browser on desktop and mobile. There are no ads interrupting gameplay and no in-app purchases.
Can you beat the computer?
On the Easy and Medium levels you can. The Unbeatable level uses a perfect minimax strategy, so it never loses. The best result you can achieve against it is a draw.
What is the difference between Easy, Medium and Unbeatable?
Easy mostly plays random squares and is good for practice. Medium takes winning moves and usually blocks yours, but sometimes plays a random square. Unbeatable always plays the best move and can only draw or win — it is powered by the minimax algorithm with alpha-beta pruning.
How do you play Tic-Tac-Toe with two players?
Select the 2 Players option, then take turns on the same device. Player 1 plays X and goes first, and the players alternate tapping empty squares until someone wins or the board fills. It is perfect pass-and-play for two people sharing one phone or computer.
Who goes first?
X always moves first in every game. Against the computer you play X, so you make the first move. In 2-player mode Player 1 is X and goes first.
Who wins if the board fills up?
If all nine squares are filled and nobody has three in a row, the game is a draw. The centre and the corners matter most in these close games.
Is Tic-Tac-Toe a solved game?
Yes. With perfect play from both sides, every game ends in a draw. That is why the Unbeatable computer cannot be beaten — the best you can do is force a stalemate by playing perfectly yourself.
How does the win streak work?
Each win against the computer on Medium or Unbeatable adds one to your streak. A draw leaves it unchanged and a loss resets it to zero. Easy is practice mode, so wins there do not count. Your best streak is saved in your browser and shown in the score strip.
Can I use the keyboard to play?
Yes. Press number keys 1 through 9 to play a square, where 1 is the top-left square and 9 is the bottom-right. The board is also fully playable with a mouse, trackpad or finger on a touchscreen.
What is the best first move in Tic-Tac-Toe?
If you go first, take a corner. Starting in a corner creates the most winning threats and forces your opponent to defend. The centre is the strongest single square on the board, so control it early if your opponent does not.
What is a fork in Tic-Tac-Toe?
A fork is a move that creates two different lines of two at the same time, so your opponent can only block one of them and you win on your next move. Forks are the main way to win against strong opponents.
Can I play Tic-Tac-Toe on my phone?
Yes. The board is responsive and tap-friendly, so it works on any modern mobile browser. Just tap squares with your finger instead of clicking with a mouse.
