About Snake
Snake is one of the most recognisable arcade games ever made. You steer a constantly moving snake around a grid, gobbling up food to grow one segment longer, and the run ends the moment you crash into a wall or your own tail. Simple to learn, genuinely hard to master — the same one-more-go feeling that made Snake a worldwide phenomenon on early mobile phones.
This modern remake keeps that classic formula and adds three tiers of food, a bonus every fifth pickup, smooth 60 fps motion, glowing visuals, particle bursts and floating score pop-ups. It plays beautifully with a keyboard on desktop, and equally well with swipe gestures or the on-screen pad on a phone. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for — the game runs straight in your browser.
Your best score is saved locally, so you can chase it across sessions. The snake speeds up as it grows, and each piece of food is worth more than the last one in line — which means a long, careful run scores far higher than a fast, reckless one.
How to play Snake
- Start moving. Press any arrow key or WASD key to begin. On a phone, swipe or drag your finger across the board, or tap one of the on-screen pad arrows. The snake starts facing right, so pick Up, Down or Right — turning Left on the very first move would run into your own body.
- Eat food to grow. Steer the snake onto a piece of food to eat it and grow one segment longer. There are three kinds: red apples (10 points, common), blue berries (30 points, less common), and rare golden stars (50 points).
- Collect bonuses and build speed. Every fifth food you eat gives a +50 bonus. The snake speeds up slightly as it grows, so the pace rises with your score.
- Avoid walls and your own body. A single collision ends the run. If you manage to eat every possible piece of food, you clear the board and get a special perfect-run win.
- Pause whenever you need. Press P, Esc or Space to pause and resume. On mobile, tap the board to toggle pause.
Scoring, food and speed
- Red apple — 10 points. The most common food. Eat these to build your score steadily.
- Blue berry — 30 points. Less common, worth three apples. Watch for the pulsing blue ring.
- Golden star — 50 points. Rare, worth five apples, and spins as it waits for you to catch it.
- Every 5th food — +50 bonus. A flat bonus on top of the food's own value, so long, consistent runs snowball quickly.
- Speed scales with length. Every segment added makes the snake slightly faster. The difficulty curve is gentle at first and genuinely demanding once you are past twenty segments.
- Best score saves locally. Your highest score is remembered in your browser and shown in the score strip above the board.
Snake tips and strategy
- Hug the edges in long straight lines. Keeping to the outer ring of the board leaves the middle open, so you always have an escape route when food spawns in an awkward spot.
- Plan several moves ahead. Before you commit to a turn, glance one or two squares further and ask where the snake will be next. Most deaths are caused by a turn made too hastily.
- Never turn back on yourself. The single most common way to die is a sudden U-turn into your own neck. The game blocks a true 180° reversal for you, but an early turn can still put the tail in your path.
- Loop in a safe pattern when food is far away. If the food is in the opposite corner, loop around the edge rather than taking a diagonal shortcut through your own body.
- Do not chase golden stars into danger. A 50-point star is only worth having if you can reach it safely. Losing a 400-point run to grab 50 points is never a good trade.
- Use pause as a breather. If the pace is getting too fast, press P for a second to reset your focus. The snake waits, you do not lose progress.
- Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. The snake's speed is fixed by length, not by how fast you tap. There is nothing to gain from moving carelessly.
Why Snake is still a great game
Snake is one of the purest skill games ever made. There is no randomness in whether you survive — only in where the food spawns — so every crash is genuinely your own. That clarity is why the game has stayed popular for over four decades, across arcade cabinets, early mobile phones, and now the web.
Playing Snake also quietly trains useful habits: reading the whole board at a glance, planning two or three moves ahead, and resisting the urge to chase a short-term reward into a long-term trap. It is a genuine coordination and focus workout, and it is short enough to fit into a coffee break.
Snake FAQ
How do you play Snake?
Use the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, swipe or drag your finger on the board on a touchscreen, or tap the on-screen arrows to steer. Guide the snake onto the food without hitting a wall or your own body. Press any direction to start moving.
Does the snake get faster?
Yes. The snake moves a little faster with every piece of food you eat, so the game becomes more challenging the longer you survive. The speed increases steadily, capped at a maximum so the game stays playable.
How much is each food worth?
Red apples are worth 10 points and are the most common. Blue berries are worth 30 points and appear less often. Rare golden stars are worth 50 points each. Every fifth food you eat also gives a 50-point bonus.
What is a good Snake score?
With red apples worth 10, blue berries 30, golden stars 50 and a 50-point bonus every five foods, anything past a few hundred points is a solid run. Long survival with a few golden stars reaches into the thousands.
Can I play Snake on my phone?
Yes. Snake supports swipe and drag gestures on the board, plus an on-screen pad with arrow buttons and a pause button. It works on any modern mobile browser and the board scales to fit the screen.
How do you pause the game?
Press P, Esc or Space on a keyboard to pause and resume, or tap the board on a touchscreen. Tapping the centre of the on-screen pad also toggles pause. The game also pauses automatically when the browser tab is hidden.
Does Snake save my best score?
Yes. Your best score is saved locally in your browser and shown in the score strip above the board, so you can come back any time and try to beat it.
Can you win Snake?
Yes. If you manage to eat every possible piece of food on the board before crashing, you clear the board and get a special perfect-run win screen. In practice this is very hard, but it is possible.
Does Snake need a download or signup?
No. Snake is built with plain HTML5 Canvas, CSS and JavaScript and runs directly in any modern browser. There is no download, no install and no signup.
Why did my snake die instantly at the start?
The snake starts facing right and cannot immediately turn left into its own body. Pick Up, Down or Right to begin. Once moving, you can turn in any direction except a full 180-degree reversal.
