About Maze Escape
Maze Escape is a free timed maze game that runs instantly in your browser. Every round generates a brand-new, randomly built maze — no two runs are ever the same. Your job is to guide the glowing purple orb from the top-left corner through the corridors to the green exit portal in the bottom-right, before the 60-second timer runs out.
The mazes are generated using a proper maze-building algorithm, so each one is a perfect maze: there is exactly one route between any two cells, the exit is always reachable, and there are never loops or unreachable pockets. That means the challenge is purely about reading the maze quickly and planning the route in your head — no luck, no dead ends you cannot backtrack out of.
Each successful escape awards points and unlocks a bigger maze. Mazes start at 15 by 15 cells and grow with every escape, up to 21 by 21 where your screen has room. On smaller screens the size is capped so the cells stay big enough to see clearly. This free online version runs directly in your browser with no download and no sign-up, and your best score is saved locally so you can chase it across sessions.
How to play Maze Escape
- Study the maze first. The 60-second timer does not start until you make your first move, so you can scan the whole board and plan a rough route before you begin.
- Steer the orb. Use the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard. On a touchscreen, drag your finger across the maze or tap the on-screen arrows. The orb moves one cell per press, and stops automatically at walls.
- Reach the green exit. The glowing green portal in the bottom-right corner is the goal. Reach it within 60 seconds to escape and earn points.
- Score big with time to spare. Every escape earns 50 points + 2 points per second remaining. Finishing with 40 seconds on the clock, for example, awards 50 + 80 = 130 points.
- Keep going. After each escape a new, larger maze appears. When the timer hits zero the run ends and your score, escape count and best score are shown.
Scoring and maze sizes
- 50 points per escape. A flat bonus every time you reach the exit.
- +2 points per second remaining. A speed bonus that rewards quick solves. The maximum for a single maze is 50 + 120 = 170 points if you escape with the full 60 seconds left.
- Score accumulates across escapes. Your total is what matters — one slow solve does not reset your run, but each loss ends the game.
- Mazes grow with every escape. Start at 15×15, up to 21×21 as your escape count rises.
- Every maze is unique. Random generation means you cannot memorise a layout and re-use it.
- Best score saved locally. Your highest score is remembered in your browser and shown in the score strip above the maze.
Maze Escape tips and strategy
- Plan before you move. Because the timer does not start until you press a direction, spend the first few seconds reading the maze. Trace a few corridors with your eyes, especially the ones that seem to lead toward the exit.
- Never enter a dead end. Every maze has exactly one route to the exit and no loops, so a dead-end corridor is a guaranteed backtrack. Skim for dead ends before entering a passage.
- Work backwards from the exit. The last stretch of the path is easy to see. Look at where the exit corridor begins, then work backwards a few cells to identify which side of the maze you should approach from.
- Use the fading trail. The orb leaves a bright cyan trail behind it as it moves. This is your visual memory of which turns you have already tried, so you can spot places you have already been.
- Watch the timer bar. It turns amber under 20 seconds and red under 10 seconds, and the whole border of the maze pulses red in the last ten seconds. Commit to a route as soon as the bar turns red — do not keep exploring.
- Use the keyboard for speed. Arrow keys and WASD move one cell per press, which is much faster than tapping on-screen arrows. On mobile, dragging your finger is faster than the pad.
- Do not panic after a wrong turn. A single wrong move costs half a second, not the whole run. Stay calm and continue planning.
Why Maze Escape is good for your brain
Maze-solving is one of the oldest forms of spatial reasoning practice in the world. Every maze asks you to build a mental map of the corridors you have seen, hold that map in your head as you move, and plan a route several steps ahead — the same skills used for reading maps, following directions, and navigating unfamiliar places.
Adding a 60-second timer turns the puzzle into a focused speed challenge, which trains fast decision-making alongside planning. It is a gentle but genuine workout for attention and short-term visual memory, and the escalating maze sizes give every session a clear sense of progress.
Maze Escape FAQ
Is Maze Escape free to play?
Yes. Maze Escape is completely free, needs no download or account, and runs directly in your web browser on desktop, tablet and mobile. There are no ads interrupting gameplay.
How much time do I get to escape each maze?
You get 60 seconds for every maze. The countdown starts when you make your first move, so you can study the maze in advance without losing any time. A timer bar under the maze turns amber under 20 seconds and red under 10 seconds.
Is every maze solvable?
Yes. Each maze is generated using a perfect-maze algorithm, which means there is exactly one route between any two cells, the exit can always be reached, and there are no loops or inaccessible areas.
How is my score calculated?
Every escape earns 50 points plus 2 points for each whole second left on the clock. Your score adds up across escapes until time runs out. Escaping a maze with 40 seconds left, for example, awards 50 + 80 = 130 points.
Do the mazes get bigger?
Yes. Mazes start at 15×15 cells and grow with each escape, up to 21×21. On small screens or short viewports the size is capped so cells stay large enough to read easily.
How do I play Maze Escape on my phone?
Drag your finger across the maze to steer — each drag step moves the orb one cell in that direction. You can also tap the on-screen arrows below the maze. Tap the maze or the play button in the centre of the d-pad to begin.
Can I use the keyboard to play?
Yes. Use the arrow keys or WASD to move the orb one cell at a time. Press Space while waiting to start the timer. The orb stops automatically at walls, so you cannot lose progress by pressing a wrong direction.
What is the best strategy for solving mazes quickly?
Look at the maze before you move — trace corridors with your eyes first. Because every maze is a perfect maze with no loops, if you walk into a dead end you must backtrack, so avoid them entirely. Look backward from the exit to see which side of the maze you should approach from.
Does Maze Escape save my best score?
Yes. Your best score is saved locally in your browser and shown in the score strip above the maze, so you can come back any time and try to beat it.
Does Maze Escape need a download?
No. Maze Escape is built with plain HTML5 Canvas, CSS and JavaScript and runs directly in any modern browser. There is no download, no install and no signup.
